"The collection of parish and civil status registers of Saint-Martin kept at the Archives Nationales d'Outre-Mer covers the period from 1773 to 1907."[1]

Historical Background[edit | edit source]

Saint Martin is the northern half of the island of Saint Martin and is a collectivity of France. The other half of the island is Sint Maartin, a constituent country of the Netherlands. The border has gone back and forth but is now stable. Few of the native peoples survived. The Spanish had the island for a short time. Massive numbers of African slaves were brought to the island in the 1600s. Therefore the people of the island may have Dutch, French and African ancestry with a little bit of native peoples and Spanish ancestry.<ref>Wikipedia contributors, Saint Martin (island), (accessed 26 March 2021).
