Purpose
The purpose of this project is to designate the correct archive for each judicial district in the Czech Republic to make it easier for researchers to know which archive to use when researching.
Instructions
Step 1: Access the Scanned Gazetteer Pages
Choose the Bohemian Gazetteer or the Moravian Gazetteer. You will need to download them for this project, due to the large size of each file.
Step 2: Select the page or pages you want to work on
- Using the task list, choose the page you want to work on. Make sure you select the tab for the Gazetteer you chose. Put your name in the name column. This way we know who's working on what page and people won't do the same work.
Step 3: Go to the page you selected in the gazetteer
- Open the gazetteer you downloaded and scroll to the page you are working on.
- You will have six or seven columns for each page, depending on the gazetteer you chose:
- Locality
- Alternate spellings or names for that locality
- Roman Catholic parish for this location
- The archive for that location and the number of respective parishes
- Numbers of parish in use
- The respective judicial district for that location.
- Lists the country.
- For this project you will use columns 1,2,4 and occasionally 6.
- The gazetteers are in alphabetical order by locality.
- Some pages were scanned more than once because the quality of the first scan was poor. If you notice missing columns or information on your, scroll forward a page or two to check for a better scan of the page.
Step 4: Search for each locality in the gazetteer spreadsheet and add the correct
- Open the the gazetteer spreadsheet.
- Go through each locality in column 1, finding it in the gazetteer spreadsheet in the municipality column. There is a tab for each letter of the alphabet. Each one has been sorted in alphabetical order by municipality to make this easier. Using control+F will make this easier.
- Check the archive column on the gazetteer spreadsheet. If there is already an archive listed, you can move on to the next locality. If not, look at column 4 in the gazetteer file you downloaded to identify the archive. They are all identified by the letter in that column
- B=Brno
- E= Plzen
- L= Litomerice
- M= Praha Mesto
- P= Praha
- S= Opava
- T= Trebon
- Z= Zamrsk
- A= Brno City
- O= Olomouc
- Enter the correct archive name in the archive column of the gazetteer spreadsheet.
For multiple localities with the same name or localities not in the gazetteer spreadsheet
- If there is more than one locality with the same name compare the judicial district (column 6) in the book with the judicial district in the gazetteer spreadsheet to determine which archive goes with that locality. Then add the archive from column 4 on the row to the gazetteer spreadsheet.
- If that locality is not in the gazetteer spreadsheet, please add it to the tab labeled "Judicial Districts Not in Other Sheets". Fill out each column as completely as you can using the columns in the gazetteer.
Step 5: Update the task list
- Put the date in the date completed column of the task list.
