History[edit | edit source]

  • The city of Concepción, eponym of the commune, was founded in 1550 with the name of Concepción de María Purísima del Nuevo Extremo by Pedro de Valdivia as part of the colonial era.
  • Concepcion became the seat of the Real Audiencia, the main court of justice of the Spanish Crown in the Kingdom of Chile in 1565.
  • Between January and March 1765, the new Concepción Foundation was marked on its current site due to an earthquake of 8.5 on the Richter scale and its respective tsunami in 1751; as a result, it also separated from the now commune of Penco.
  • On February 27, 2010, there was an earthquake measuring 8.8 on the Richter scale, with an epicenter 90 kilometers northwest of the city, causing numerous damages. (It is possible that some records were lost as a result of the disaster.)
  • It is known as military, industrial and economic center thanks to its role as capital of the Kingdom of Chile for a while and currently of the Province of Chile.
  • The commune of Concepción has a current population of around 250,000 inhabitants. [1]
