French Colonization (1900-1960)
In the 1890s, France began taking control of parts of modern Niger. A Zinder Military Territory was created in 1900 that controlled most of southern Niger. From 1900-1911, Niger was part of the Senegambia and Niger Colony and then the Upper Senegal and Niger colony. In 1922, Niger officially became a colony of France. Niger gained independence in 1960.[1]
