French Colonization (about 1882-1958)[edit | edit source]

Before 1882, the coastal portions of French Guinea were part of the French colony of Senegal. In 1892, French Guinea was established in the same borders as its previous colony and was then known as Rivières du Sud. This area was renamed the Colony of French Guinea in 1894. In 1904, French Guinea and several other colonies were combined and became French West Africa. French Guinea became an independent nation in 1958, and was renamed Guinea. French is the official language. [1]
