The Bulgarian archival system was first established under the communist regime. The Cyril and Methodius National Library served as a quasi archive in the pre-communist period. Some Bulgarian records for the Ottoman period may be located in Turkey and Greece.

Information on Bulgarian sources is very limited. Virtually nothing is known about land, probate, and military records. There are some genealogical collections in the Central Historical Archive. Also, compiled genealogies exist in some community libraries (reading halls) but it is impossible to judge the extent of these compilations throughout the country.
