The collection consists of an index to boituaries in local newspapers created by the Gail Borden Public Library for years 1922-2017. This index will be updated periodically as more records become available.

  • Name of deceased
  • Date of death
  • Birth date
  • Place of death
  • Name of spouse
  • Name of parents

How Do I Search This Collection?[edit | edit source]

Before searching this collection, it is helpful to know:

  • The name of your ancestor
  • The approximate date of death
  • The last known residence of your ancestor

How Do I Analyze the Results?[edit | edit source]

Compare each result from your search with what you know to determine if there is a match. This may require viewing multiple records or images. Keep track of your research in a research log.

What Do I Do Next?[edit | edit source]

When you have located your ancestor’s record, carefully evaluate each piece of information given. These pieces of information may give you new biographical details. You should also look for leads to other records about your ancestors.

I Found the Person I Was Looking For, What Now?[edit | edit source]

  • Search for a death certificate
  • Use the information from the obituary index to obtain the actual obituary
  • Search for the family in census records
  • Search for service and pension records if the individual served in the military

I Can't Find the Person I'm Looking For, What Now?[edit | edit source]

  • Look for variant spellings of the names. You should also look for alias names, nicknames and abbreviated names
  • Search the indexes and records of nearby localities
  • Collect entries for every person who has the same surname. This list can help you identify possible relations that can be verified by records
  • Try viewing the original record to see if there were errors in the transcription of the name, age, residence, etc. Remember that there may be more than one person in the records with the same name
