Jelling Parish, Vejle, Denmark Genealogy

Jelling parish is rich with history. It is the point from which Christianity spread to the rest of Denmark. Harold Bluetooth was the first Danish king to become christian and converted about 960 AD. Upon doing so, he erected a stave church, adjacent to his father's burial mound. This church burned down and was replaced by two more stave churches. After all three had burnt, a limestone church was built in 1100 AD on the site of the previous 3. This church still stands today and is the current jelling church. It is one of the oldest churches in Denmark, its walls are covered in mosaics created in early Christendom. In the days of the reformation, the mosaics were painted over and covered. But archaeologists have recently begun removing this paint to reveal the originals.
