Purpose

We have courthouse photos on a number of U.S. county pages.  This project will obtain and upload photos for those states that do not currently have photos.   A separate project will then add the photographs to the pages.

Instructions

Go to the Task List and sign out group of counties to work on.

Part 1 - Downloading

1. Go to Flickr account that has county photos

2. Choose the state you will be working on and click on it. This will open a master page with photographs of all the county courthouses (You will need to click on each picture to download it). Note, if there is more than one photograph for a county, just choose the best one and download it.

3. Click on the photograph you are going to work with and open it. Once you have opened the photograph, there will be a download button (an arrow with a line under it) on the lower right side of the screen. Click on that button. You will then get to choose what size photograph you want to download. Select “square (150 x 150)” and click on it. A pop-up screen will then appear asking what you want to do with the download. Choose “Save File” and then click on “OK.” This will download the picture to the place you normally download files (a download folder, your desktop, etc). The pop-up box will also show you the name of the download (a string of numbers such as 3923472382_19283 with .jpg after it). You will need this number in order to locate the image in your downloads.

4. Go to the file you have downloaded and rename it from the numbers to XXXyyyCourthouse. Change the XXX to the state name and the yyy to the county name. (The Davidson County, TN courthouse would be named TennesseeDavidsonCourthouse.

5. Continue downloading and renaming until you have finished all of the pictures for that state.

Part 2 – Uploading

1.  Using the navigation menu on the right side of the wiki page, select Toolbox and then Special Pages. Go to the Media Reports and Uploads section and choose “Upload File.”

2. Using the Browse function, locate the picture you have saved and renamed on your computer. Open that file. This will also plug the name of that file into the Destination filename field.

3. In the Summary Box add the following: “(Photo taken by: Jimmy Emerson. Website: County Courthouses, Flickr, http://www.flickr.com/photos/auvet/collections/72157601030031865/. Used by permission.”

4. For Licensing, use the drop down menu and select “Creative Commons 4.0 International.” This is an important part, so be sure you have selected the right one.

5. Once you are ready, click on “Upload File” and you should see the confirmation page come back saying you have successfully uploaded the file. You can then move on to the next photograph.

When you have done all of the pictures for your counties, go back to the Task Page and indicated the date completed.  You are then ready to sign out another set of counties.
