FamilySearch Wiki:Search engine optimization project
Purpose
[edit | edit source]
A Search Engine Optimization (SEO) paragraph is used to help get a page noticed by the large search engines, such as Google, Bing and Yahoo, when they go out looking for matches to a query they receive. It contains keywords that have been identified by experts as those most likely to be used by someone searching for genealogical records. Since we started placing the SEO paragraphs on the wiki, our number of hits has increased significantly, so we are attempting to place these paragraphs on as many locality pages as possible to drive new visitors to the wiki.
Example
[edit | edit source]
An SEO paragraph looks like this …
Guide toFaringdon, Berkshire family history and genealogy: parish registers, transcripts, census records, birth records, marriage records, and death records.
Or this ….
Guide to Bandera County Texas genealogy and family history, birth records, marriage records, death records, census records, family history, and military records.
Instructions:
[edit | edit source]
- The paragraph comes directly below the breadcrumb trail on the page and above anything else that may appear in the page code. If there is no breadcrumb trail on the page, the SEO paragraph will be at the top.
- Please note, the locality name, along with the words “genealogy and family history” should always appear in bold lettering. If you are unsure about how to do this, please ask and I will be happy to walk you through it.
- Once you have entered the SEO paragraph, go down to where you preview the page, and if your preview looks ok, in the Edit Summary box you would enter the words “added SEO” and then save the page and go on to the next page in the list.
Assignment
[edit | edit source]
You will be assigned a locality and will add the paragraph to every page that is part of that locality. For example, if you were assigned the locality of Texas, then you would place the paragraph on all of the county, city or town pages in Texas.
Example: Bowie County, Texas
Task List[edit | edit source]
Please refer to the Task List to sign up to place SEOs on a particular locality.
