Although Poland is predominantly Catholic country, It had reputation for religious Tolerance. This was especially true after the statute of toleration of 1573, after which Poland was sometimes called the Paradise of Heretics. Here, those who were victims of persecution by the counter-reformation found refuge. Jews were also welcomed and Poland developed into a haven for Jews persecuted in other lands. Jews and Protestants were assured protection by the state.
