Guild and Apprenticeship records[edit | edit source]
Guild and apprenticeship records were maintained to record those who entered into apprenticeships with merchants, craftsmen, tradesmen and other skilled laborers. Records begin in 1450 and represent some of the oldest family history records in Romania. They were maintained until about 1800. About 5 – 10 percent of the general population contracted apprenticeships. These records can be used to gather infomation on the apprentice and his family members, and are especially useful in the earlier records when other family history records do not exist.
Information provided:
Names of persons with whom the apprentice is indentured. Names of the apprentice, age or date of birth, places of origin or residence, names of and relationship to other family members and types of skills to be learned. Some guild recods also list birth and marriage dates of family members.
