Brief History

The 12th Regiment, Rhode Island Infantry was organized at Providence and mustered in for nine months October 18, 1862. It was mustered out July 29, 1863.[1]

For more information on the history of this unit, see:

Companies in this Regiment with the Counties of Origin

Men often enlisted in a company recruited in the counties where they lived though not always. After many battles, companies might be combined because so many men were killed or wounded. However if you are unsure which company your ancestor was in, try the company recruited in his county first.

The Civil War Soldiers and Sailors database lists 1,342 men on its roster for this unit. Roster.

Company I - Captain George C. Almy - many men from Newport County.[2]
