1st Units

  • 1st Battalion, Alabama
    "Units of the Confederate States Army" by Joseph H. Crute, Jr. contains no history for this unit.
  • 1st Battalion, Alabama Artillery
    1st Artillery Battalion, organized at Fort Morgan, Alabama, in February, 1861. Containing six companies, members of the unit were recruited in the cities of Mobile, Selma, and Montgomery.
  • 1st Regiment, Alabama Cavalry
    1st Cavalry Regiment was assembled in November, 1861, at Montgomery, Alabama. Its companies were raised in the counties of Montgomery, Morgan, Dale, Tallapoosa, Calhoun, Pike, Autauga, Monroe, Butler, and Mobile
  • 1st Regiment, Alabama Infantry
    1st Infantry Regiment completed its organization at Pensacola, Florida, in March, 1861. The men were from the counties of Tallapoosa, Pike, Lowndes, Wilcox, Talladega, Barbour, and Macon.
  • 1st Regiment, Alabama, Tennessee and Mississippi Infantry
    1st Alabama, Tennessee, and Mississippi Infantry Regiment was organized in December, 1861. It was composed of four Alabama, four Tennessee, and two Mississippi companies. The unit served in the Western Department and was captured in April, 1862, at Island No. 10. After being exchanged the four Tennessee companies merged into the 42nd Tennessee Regiment.
  • 1st Regiment, Mobile (Alabama) Volunteers
    1st Mobile Volunteers, Local Defense Troops [also called Mobile Guards or Mobile Regiment] was organized in December, 1861, at Mobile, Alabama. was ordered to disband on January 25, 1865. However, it seems that a remnant served at Spanish Fort and Fort Blakely, and when Mobile was evacuated on April 12, the few remaining men did disband.

  • 2nd Battalion, Alabama

  • 2nd Regiment, Alabama Cavalry
    2nd Cavalry Regiment was organized during May, 1862, at Montgomery, Alabama. Its companies were from the counties of Calhoun, Shelby, Greene, Montgomery, Tuscaloosa, Butler, Coosa, Monroe, and Dallas.
  • 2nd Regiment, Alabama Infantry
    2nd Infantry Regiment [also called Magnolia Regiment] was organized at Fort Morgan, Alabama, during April, 1861. Its members were raised in Calhoun, Pickens, Franklin, Monroe, Clarke, Mobile, and Jackson counties. The regiment formed the garrison at Fort Morgan, serving as infantry and artillery, until March, 1862, when it was ordered to Fort Pillow in Tennessee. Here it disbanded because its term of service had expired.
  • 2nd Regiment, Alabama Reserve (63rd Regiment Infantry)
    2nd Reserve Regiment [also called 63rd Regiment] was organized in July, 1864, at Montgomery, Alabama. Many of the enlisted men were between the ages of sixteen and eighteen and were from the southernmost counties of the state.

    3rd Cavalry Regiment was formed at Tupelo, Mississippi, in June, 1862. These companies were from Monroe, Choctaw, Wilcox, Mobile, Perry, Dallas, Calhoun, and Autauga counties.
  • 3rd Regiment, Alabama Infantry
    3rd Infantry Regiment was organized by Colonel J.M. Withers in April, 1861, at Montgomery, Alabama. Men of this unit were recruited in the cities of Mobile and Montgomery, and the counties of Man, Lowndes, Coosa, and Autuaga.

  • 4th Battalion, Alabama
    10th Infantry Battalion [also called 4th Battalion] was assembled at Nashville, Tennessee, in November, 1861. Later this unit became Snodgrass' 16th Alabama Battalion.
  • 4th Battalion, Alabama Cavalry (Love's)
    The Fourth Alabama Cavalry Battalion (Love's) was made up of three companies, "A", "B", and "C", organized from Alabama between August and September 1863. They were consolidated with the Phillips' [GA] Legion, Wade Hampton's Cavalry Battalion (May to 11 July 1864). Then they merged into the Jeff. Davis [MS] Cavalry Legion.
  • 4th Battalion, Alabama Infantry
    16th Infantry Battalion, [also called 4th; also numbered 15th] formerly Clifton's 4th or 10th Battalion, was organized at Corinth, Mississippi, during the spring of 1862.During February, 1863, it merged into the 55th Alabama Regiment.

  • 4th Regiment, Alabama Cavalry (Roddy's)
    4th(Roddey's) Cavalry Regiment was organized at Tuscumbia, Alabama, in October, 1862, and moved to Tennessee where it wintered. The men were from Franklin, Lauderdale, Lawrence, and Walker counties.
  • 4th Regiment, Alabama Cavalry (Russell's)
    4th (Russell's) Cavalry Regiment was formed at Murfreesboro, Tennessee, in December, 1862, by consolidating four companies from the 3rd (Forrest's Old) Tennessee Cavalry Regiment, six companies of the 4th Alabama Battalion, and the Russell Rangers or 15th Tennessee Cavalry Battalion. Its members were from the counties of Madison, Wilcox, Monroe, Cherokee, Jackson, Marshall, and Lawrence. was included in the surrender on May 4, 1865.
  • 4th Regiment, Alabama Infantry
    4th Infantry Regiment completed its organization at Dalton, Georgia, in May 1861. The men were recruited in Dallas, Madison, Macon, Lauderdale, Jackson, Marengo, Perry, and Conecuh counties.

    4th Reserve Regiment [also called 65th Regiment] was organized at Mobile, Alabama, during the fall of 1864 by consolidating the 1st, 3rd, and 4th Alabama Reserve Battalions. The men, between the ages of sixteen and eighteen, were from Mobile and the counties of Conecuh, Macon, Coosa, and Dale.

  • 5th Battalion, Alabama Infantry Volunteers (Blount's)
    9th Infantry Battalion [also called 5th Battalion] was organized at Newbern, Alabama, in November, 1861.After the fight at Hoover's Gap, two additional companies were assigned, and the 58th Alabama Regiment was formed.
  • 5th Regiment, Alabama Cavalry
    5th Cavalry Regiment, organized at Tuscumbia, Alabama, in December, 1862, recruited its men in Morgan, Lawrence, Fayette, Franklin, Lauderdale, Tuscaloosa, and Marion counties.The small force that remained surrendered at Danville, Alabama, on May 6, 1865.
