Schleswig-Holstein became a province of the Kingdom of Prussia in 1867. Civil registration in Prussia began on 1 October 1874. The northern part of Schleswig split off from Germany and joined Denmark in 1920 (the rest remained a Prussian province until 1946). As such, civil registration records were created for the province of Schleswig-Holstein during the years 1874–1920.
