| CULLEN, a burgh, seaport, and parish, in the county of Banff, 5 miles (W. by N.) from Portsoy, and 170 (N. by E.) from Edinburgh. The lands have, from a remote period, been the property of the ancestors of the Earl of Seafield, the present proprietor, who traces his descent from Gilchrist Ogilvie, created Earl of Angus by King Malcolm Canmore.
| | Seafield was a parish in Banffshire which was likely positioned within the parishes of Cullen and Rathven. Few records exist of this parish, and it is unclear when it was dissolved, although it likely existed in 1698 to be the namesake of the Viscounty and Earldom of Seafield, and likely was disolved prior to 1794 as it does not appear in the Banffshire accounts within the First Statistical Account of Scotland. Despite having no unique parish registers or census records, a parish number was given to the parish. The name Seafield may have been used to refer to chapels of ease or nonconformist churches within Cullen and Rathven. Upon the establishement of Statutory Registers, the parish of Rathven was split into two registration districts, Rathven and Seafield. |

| ==Civil Registration Records==
| |
| | |
| Government or civil registration of births, marriages, and deaths (also called statutory records) began on January 1, 1855 in Scotland. Each parish has a registrar's office and large cities have several. The records are created by the registrars and copies are sent to the General Register Office in Edinburgh. Annual indexes are then created for the records for the whole country. <br><br>See the article on <u>Scotland Civil Registration</u> for more information and to access the records.<br>

| ==Probate Records==
| |
| | |
| Seafield was under the probate jurisdiction of the Commissary Court of Aberdeen until 1823, and since then has been under the Sheriff's Court of Banff. Probate records for 1513- 1901 are indexed online at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk. You must register on the website but use of the index to probate records, called 'Wills & Testaments,' is free. You may then purchase a copy of the document or, if the document is before 1823, it will be on microfilm at the FamilySearch Library. To find the microfilm numbers, search in the library catalog for the 'Place' of Aberdeen and the subject of 'Probate records.' Then click on the link to the records of the Commissariat of Aberdeen.<br>
