Portugal conquered Malacca in Malaysia in 1511. The Dutch took over the area in 1641. The British West Indies leased Penang Island in 1786. The British through various treaties gained more territory in the Malaysian area until in 1946, Malaysia became a crown colony. During WWII, the Japanese army invaded parts of Malaysian and remained for three years. During its history, many Chinese also came to Malaysia.
