| The history of the Municipality of Colares is closely linked to the process of original and definitive configuration of the Municipality of Vigia. In its historical records, there is a reference that the original village, from which it evolved to the category of municipality, was located in the territory of the Tupinambá nation, the same that was colonized by the friars of the Jesuit Order, around the 17th century, which resulted in the constitution of the Municipality of Vigia, in 1693.<br>

| In this category, Colares could not remain for a long time, because, although the same authors do not give greater references of a legal nature, they claim that it was demoted, returning to bear the title of Vila, again, in 1883, in compliance with the Provincial Law. 1,152, enacted on April 4, abandoning its status as a simple parish. By the same law, Colares was recognized as a municipality, starting to configure its territorial patrimony with lands dismembered from the Municipality of Vigia. With the proclamation of the Republic, a new administrative and political order was established in the State and as a result, the Provisional Government, through Decree nº 119, promulgated in March 1890, created the Municipal Council of Intendence for Colares.<br>

| In 1901, by the provisions contained in Law nº 752, of February 25, the Municipality of Colares was extinguished and its territorial patrimony was annexed to the Municipality of Vigia.<br>

| It should be noted that Colares, by the same law, also lost the name of Judiciary District. In 1905, Decree nº 1.388, of July 21, promoted the division of the subprefecture of Colares in two and its condition of area was ratified, under the influence of the District of Vigia.<br>

| On December 29, 1961, through State Law No. 2460, Colares regained autonomy as a municipality, thus being separated from Vigia. Today, it has a single district, which bears its name, and which is the municipal seat.<br>
