:It was founded in 1951 by the Danish archaeologist Frans Blom and the Swiss photographer Gertrude Duby, who for many years dedicated themselves to the study, preservation and dissemination of the indigenous culture and ecology of Chiapas. The building that houses it is neoclassical in style and its construction dates from 1891; It is surrounded by extensive botanical gardens and a nursery. Its permanent rooms bear the names of Lacandon Ethnography , Explorers , Moxviquil Archaeological Hall , Chapel (sacred art) and Gertrude Duby's Room. It has a library specializing in Mayan culture, a natural history field study center, guest rooms, a shop, a restaurant and two rooms for temporary exhibitions.
