Cuneo was founded in 1198 by the local population, who declared it an independent commune. In 1238 they were recognized as free commune by Emperor Frederick II.

It became the main Angevine possession in Northern Italy; their rule ended in 1382 when Cuneo was acquired by the Duchy of Savoy.
Cuneo became an important stronghold of the expanding Savoy state, and was thus besieged by France many times. In all the sieges Cuneo resisted successfully. Cuneo was conquered by France only during the Napoleonic Wars, when it was made the capital of the Stura department. After the restoration of the Kingdom of Sardinia, and the unification of Italy, Cuneo became the capital of its namesake province in 1859.
==Locating Town of Origin in Italy==
In order to research your family in Italy, it is essential that you have identified the place where they came from. You must know the city, town, or parish that they came from. A few records are indexed, but many records will require going directly to photocopied local records, which are only available by town name. it will be difficult to identify the place of origin by going directly to Italy sources. Therefore, you will need to search in United States (or other country of arrival) sources first. See [[Italy Gathering Information to Locate Place of Origin|'''Italy Gathering Information to Locate Place of Origin''']] to learn how to search for the Italian place of origin in United States records.
