The Diocese of Durham forms part of the Province of York of the Church of England.
History
The diocese's history goes back to 635 when the Diocese of Lindisfarne was founded. In 995 the see was moved from Chester-le-Street to Durham and the diocese was renamed.
The area of the diocese incorporates:
- County Durham (except Teesdale),
- Tyne and Wear south of the River Tyne
Archdeaconries and deaneries
The diocese is divided into three Archdeaconries containing a total of sixteen deaneries:
- the Archdeaconry of Auckland
- comprises the Deaneries of Auckland, Barnard Castle, Darlington, Stanhope and Stockton.
- the Archdeaconry of Durham
- comprises the Deaneries of Durham, Easington, Hartlepool, Lanchester and Sedgefield.
- the Archdeaconry of Sunderland
- comprises the Deaneries of Chester le Street, Gatehead, Gateshead West, Houghon le Spring, Jarrow and Wearmouth.
