Center Resources

Collections

  • (List additional collections you have such as the types of books and microfilm you have on indefinite loan; though you will not want to list every single item you have. Just give visitors to this page a general idea of your resources.)

Databases and Software

  • FHC Portal: This center has access to the Family History Center Portal page which gives free access in the center to premium family history software and websites that generally charge for subscriptions. These free sites include Ancestry.com, Swedish ArkivDigital, etc.

Hardware and Equipment

  • This center has approximately 25 computers, two laptop computers, one microfilm reader, one microfiche reader, one microfilm printer, printers in both color and black and white, and a digital camera for transferring photos and documents into digital format. It also has a digital projector and a 42" digital screen in a separate room, so two classes can be taught simultaneously.

(Include sections for any other services your center provides. Add additional sections for those services. See the Mesa and Logan FHC pages for examples.)

Consultant Training

Consultant Policies

Dress Code

As representatives of the Church, consultants should be examples of modest, neat, and clean dress and grooming. While in the building and on the grounds, all staff is expected to keep Church standards.

Scheduled Shift

Shifts are scheduled in 3-hour blocks. Please plan to arrive a few minutes early so the group before you can leave on time. Also, please organize your time so you can be present for your entire shift. Church policy states that we must always have at least 2 consultants of the same gender (or a married couple) at the center at any time. Please call your supervisor if this becomes an issue, and lock and leave the center until other consultants can arrive.

Attendance

If you are ill and need to be absent during your shift, please call your shift supervisor to let them know.

If you know in advance that you will need to be absent, first ask if the other consultants on your shift if they will be there to cover for you. If at least 2 people of the same gender (or a married couple) will not be present, you are responsible for finding an experienced consultant who will substitute for you. This is usually done by calling someone on another shift and arranging to switch with them. An updated staff list is posted on the bulletin boards. Then please call your shift supervisor to let them know who will be covering your shift during your absence.

Computers

Do not clean or touch the monitors. Do not change any hardware or software on any computer and do not allow any patron or consultant to do so. If you have any computer problems or have a suggestion, report it by clicking on “Report a Problem” near the “Sign In” button on the desktop. Describe fully the problem including which computer the problem occurred on, your name & email address or phone number. If there is an immediate problem with all computers that cannot be fixed by turning the computer off, waiting a few minutes, and then turning it back on, call one of the technical staff, whose numbers are posted by the phones.

Materials

All materials including CDs, books, microfilms, computers, projectors, etc. must remain in the FHC. Handouts from past classes are kept in a binder above the printer or in the file drawer marked Research Materials. Copies may be made for $.05 per page. Please keep originals in the binder.

Food and Drink

Due to the sensitive nature of the computers and microfilm/fiche, food and drink are not allowed in the computer rooms.

Entrance Policy

Patrons and consultants should enter through the West or North (wheelchair accessible) doors. The North door is wheelchair accessible. On Sundays, before 4 pm, using the West entrance would disturb Sunday School classes, so we must use the entrance through the microfilm room.

For security reasons, do not allow anyone to use the FHC as a “pass through” entrance to other areas of the building. No one should be in the center without a consultant present.

Keys

One or two consultants on each shift have FHC keys. Not all consultants are issued keys. If you have a key, it should never be loaned to others. If you need a key, contact Sherry Stevens.

Use of Your Time

Please keep the center open the full scheduled hours and do not close early unless absolutely necessary.

When patrons do not need your help, use your time to: 1) increase your genealogical research skills by studying topics of interest, learning to use new resources, etc. 2) work on your own genealogy, or 3) do indexing.
