Understand Important Historical Events

  • Safavid Dynasty (1501–1736): The Safavid Empire established Shiite Islam as the official religion of Iran, leading to significant changes in land ownership and governance. This period saw the centralization of authority and the creation of detailed administrative records. During this time, the region was commonly referred to as Persia in the Western world.
  • Qajar Dynasty (1789–1925): The Qajar rulers implemented various land reforms and administrative changes. This period also saw increased European influence and the introduction of modern record-keeping practices. The name Persia continued to be used internationally.
  • Pahlavi Dynasty (1925–1979): Reza Shah Pahlavi officially requested in 1935 that the international community refer to the country as Iran instead of Persia. His son, Mohammad Reza Shah, later announced that both names could be used interchangeably. This period included extensive land reforms, including the redistribution of land from large landowners to peasants, significantly altering land ownership records.
  • Islamic Revolution (1979): The overthrow of the Pahlavi monarchy and the establishment of the Islamic Republic led to further changes in land ownership and administrative records. The new government implemented policies that affected property rights and record-keeping. Since 1979, the official name of the country has been the Islamic Republic of Iran.
