Israel Research Tips
- From 1920 to 1948, Israel was administered as part of the British mandate.
- Until the end of World War I in 1918, Israel was a part of the Ottoman Empire. During this period the country was divided into different administrative districts known as sanjaks and was sometimes considered a part of Greater Syria. For more information on Ottoman Palestine, see Israel History and State of Palestine History. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Ottoman Empire conducted detailed censuses of its population. FamilySearch provides access to some of these digitized records. For more information see Palestine, Ottoman Census and Population Registers and Palestine, Nablus, Population Registers.
- For more information about tribes and clans which have historically inhabited the area of Israel and the surrounding Levant region, see Israel Tribes and Clans. This page includes links to books that detail the histories and genealogies of certain tribes who have inhabited the region of Israel, as well as throughout the Arab world.
- See the Israel Societies for organizations and communities focused on Israeli genealogy. Connecting with societies and genealogy research groups is important for exchanging ideas and learning new strategies.
