What is in This Collection?

Card index of vital records for lepers received or admitted to the leper settlement at Molokai. Also called the Hansen's disease records. The card index includes birth certificates of persons born at Kalauapapa, death records for the leper settlement at Molokai, and an index of marriages for patients with Hansen's Disease.

This collection contains information on patients, employees, volunteers, and kokua (helper) who resided in the Kalaupapa Leper Settlement on the island of Molokai, Hawaii, beginning in 1865. A variety of records were used to glean information about these people. These records included arrival, birth, marriage, death, and burial records, and census population schedules.
