Background[edit | edit source]

Types of censuses[edit | edit source]

Algerian Population Census[edit | edit source]

Since its independence, Algeria has conducted censuses in 1966, 1977, 1987, and 2020--these records are likely stored at the National Archives.

French census[edit | edit source]

French censuses can be found in the Department d'Oran book above, as well as through Geneanet.com. The French censuses provide some details about native Algerians, but mostly record information about European Algerians.[1] Some websites also exist with information about residents of French villages during this period, such as the Mers-el-Kébir (see more information above).

Ottoman census[edit | edit source]

Ottoman census records for Algeria are likely held at either the National Archives of Algeria (see more information above), or the Başbakanlık Osmanlı Arşivi (Ottoman Archives of the Prime Minister's Office) in Istanbul.

Information Recorded in the Records[edit | edit source]

  • National Archives of Algeria: Contains the administrative documents of the Algerian government since 1962, likely including the census records of 1966, 1977, 1987, 1998, and 2020. The older Sharia Courts Series obtained from the French in 1974 dates back to the Ottoman period and includes the following records: probate, marriage, divorce, declarations of lineage, and inheritance. This document (Arabic) describes the holdings of the Archive.
  • Département d'Oran, fonds de la préfecture, sous-série 1 G, population Archival: A book created by the Department of Oran in Algeria with census information from 1906, 1911, 1931, and 1954. It contains the following information about Algerian (mostly European) citizens: Births, marriages, deaths, population statistics and movements.
  • Geneanet: Census records for French colonists in Algeria includes: names, birthdates, occupation, household relationships.
