Antigua was first colonized by English settlers in 1632; nearby Barbuda was colonized in 1661 from Antigua. Antigua and Barbuda formed part of the Leeward Islands Federation from 1871 until 1956, when Antigua and Barbuda became a separate Crown Colony. They were part of the West Indies Federation from 1958 until 1962. They became an Associated State of the United Kingdom in February 1967, and obtained independence in November 1981.Expansion depth limit exceeded
