Vermont Town Clickable Maps

Purpose

  • Part A: Make the Image Map code for a Vermont town in each county.
  • Part B: Create the rest of the town templates using the same Image Map code from Part A.

Task List

Instructions

Part A - Create the clickable Map

Step 1 - Choose a County and First Town

1. Choose a county from on Part A Tab of the Task List and put your name beside it.

2. Now go to Part B Tab on the Task List to find the county you signed up for and choose the first town.

Step 2 - Create a Town Clickable Map Template in the Wiki

2. Create a new template for the town you picked in Step 1 by copying and pasting the following wikitext into the Wiki search field on the Main Page:

Template:VTCOUNTYTOWN


3. Replace the county and town name in the template before clicking on Enter.

4. This will bring back a red link for the proposed new template. Click on the red link to make the page.

Step 3 - Download the Map Image

1. To locate the map image you need to download, go to this Vermont Counties category and click on the county subcategory you signed up for.

2. On this page, you will see a list of all the town maps listed in the files at the bottom of the category. Click on the correct town you are working on and download the image.


Step 4 - Create a Image Map


1. In a new tab on your browser, create an image map using these instructions here starting at Step 1.

4. After you have finished making the map clickable, and after you have clicked "Create Image Map" on the Map Editor Tool, copy all of the generated Wikitext code.

Step 5 - Add the Image Map Code to the Wiki page

1. Go back to the Wiki tab with your the new template you are creating and paste the Image Map code into the Wiki page.

2. At the end of the image map code at the bottom of the Wiki page, highlight the code: </imagemap> and delete it.

3. Copy and paste the following wikitext directly below the last of the code for the clickable map so it's the last thing on the page:

4. Replace COUNTYNAME in the category to the county your town is in.

5. If the image is pretty large, make it a bit smaller by adjusting the pixel size as needed in the Wikitext cod so it fits nicely on the page.

6. Click on Save Page.

7. Review the page to make sure the map is clickable and the category is not a red link. Fix as necessary.

Step 6 - Add the Template to the Town Page

1. Go back to the Task List to go to the town page where you will put the template.

2. In the Contents, click on Maps and go down to the header, Maps or scroll down the page to the header, Maps.
3. Click on Edit Source next to the Maps header.

4. Directly under the Maps header, paste the following wikitext code:

[[{{VTCOUNTYTOWN}}|right]]


5. Change "VTCOUNTYTOWN" to match the name of the clickable map template you made.

Part B - Create the Remainder Town Clickable Map Templates

Step 1 - Choose the Next Town from the Task List

1. Go back to Part B on the Task List and click on the next town on the Google Sheet.

Step 2 - Create a Town Clickable Map Template in the Wiki

1. Open a new tab of the Wiki in your browser by clicking on this Link.

2. Create a new template for the town by copying and pasting the following Wikitext into the Wiki search field in the middle of the page:

Template:VTCOUNTYTOWN


3. Replace the county and town name in the template before clicking on Enter.

4. This will bring back a red link for the proposed new template. Click on the red link to make the page.

Step 3 - Copy the Wikitext Code from the 1st Clickable Map

1. Go back to the Wiki tab that contains the first town Clickable map for the county, you created in Part A.

2. Click on Edit source at the top of the template page and copy the code on the page by using Ctrl+A to highlight first.

Step 4 - Paste the Wikitext into your New Clickable Map Template

1. Go back to the tab with the template open on the page and paste the content to the Wiki page.

2. Click on Save Page.

3. Review the page to make sure the map is clickable and the category is not a red link. Fix it if necessary.

Step 5 - Choose Another Town

1. Go back to the Part B tab on the Task List and sign the date next to the town.

2. Choose the next town and repeat the steps under Part B until you finish the county. Then sign up for another county.
