Civil Registration Offices

The General Register Office holds a central copy of all birth, marriage, and death registrations in England. These certificates can be ordered from their website (a login is required but it is free to register and search).

Sometimes research might be required to determine where a town or parish was in a former registration district, or even its current district. For a list of the historic and current registration districts and their parishes, see Civil Registration districts in Brecknockshire between 1837 and 1974.

Sometimes additional help is available from local registrars. For example, proof of death and close family relationship can make more recent records available. Visit or correspond with:

The museum depicts the history of the Borough of Llanidloes during the last 300 years. Exhibits include a recreated Victorian kitchen, parlour, and gentleman’s study.

The Textile Museum in Newtown - just over the bridge into Commercial Street gives visitors a chance to see how the handloom weavers of the mid-19th century lived and worked. The block which houses the Museum was built in the 1830s as a hand-loom weaving factory, the looms occupying the third and fourth floor above three pairs of back-to-back cottages on the lower floors. Newtown's development into a centre of industry is described through exhibits in the former cottages, while on the top two floors the story of fleece to flannel is illustrated by looms and spinning wheels, alongside displays of related industries and influential local people such as Pryce Jones.

The Old Bell, a 16th century inn, has been converted into a local history museum by Montgomery Civic Society. Eleven rooms house displays illustrating the long social and civic history of the ancient County Town of Montgomeryshire. There are permanent exhibitions relating to the medieval and Norman castles and their archaeological excavations with excellent scale models of both. Two rooms are devoted to the Workhouse and the Cambrian Railways. A small room in the museum has been restored to demonstrate the various methods of construction in this half timbered building.

Powysland Museum illustrates the archaeology and social history of Montgomeryshire from the earliest prehistoric settlers to the 20th century. It’s housed in a renovated and restored warehouse beside the Montgomery Canal.
