Because of South Carolina’s history as an agricultural state many residents owned land. In general, for earliest records, begin by searching 1) Charleston District, 2) your ancestor’s residential district, 3) neighboring districts, 4) the residential county, 5) neighboring counties. Not all districts and counties kept records. For online resources, see South Carolina Land and Property.
