Census and population records (recensements)

Research use: Census records list the names of each member of a family and show ages and other valuable information for linking families. They are used in conjunction with the parish registers and land cadaster to establish family and house or farm names.

Record type: Enumeration of population.

Time period: A census of the former Duchy of Luxembourg was taken in 1766 and is located in Brussels, Belgium. Censuses of the modern Grand Duchy of Luxembourg date from 1821 to the present. The 1895 census is the latest available.

Contents: Names of heads of families and their children. Later censuses give ages or birth dates, places of residence, civil status, occupation, etc.

Location: States Archives (Archives de l'Etat) of Luxembourg and Brussels, Belgium.

Population coverage: Before 1821, 20-30%; after 1821, 50-70%.

Reliability: Good.

Accessibility: Census records 1766-1895 have already been filmed on 1538 rolls of film.[1]
