Historical Background[edit | edit source]

The Bruneian Empire probably had control over most of the island of Borneo, including the area of Brunei. In 1888, Brunei became a British protectorate. On 1 January 1984, Brunei gained its independence from the United Kingdom.^[1]

Birth and death records started in 1926 for British subjects and from 1948 for others.^[2]
