- Ohio River, largest tributary of the Mississippi River, helps separate the states of Ohio, West Virginia, Indiana, Kentucky, and Illinois, is formed by the confluence of the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and flows generally southwesterly past Cincinnati and Louisville to join the Mississippi near Cairo, Illinois.
