Starting in 1538, churches kept records of each person buried in their church yards. Public cemeteries existed since the late 1800s. To learn more about burial records...

July 1837-present[edit | edit source]

Civil records of deaths were recorded by the government no matter religious affiliation or place of burial. Information regarding the death of a person was given to the local superintendant. He would record it in his register, and forward it to the Registrar General.  Read more about death records...
