Task List[edit | edit source]

Instructions[edit | edit source]

There are several parts to this project. You may go through and update the sandbox by each step and record it on the Task List. Or you can complete a whole state at one time. This project must be completed in order. Do not skip ahead to another part of the project.

Part A -[edit | edit source]

Step 1 - Remove Links found in Headings[edit | edit source]

 • Go through sandbox page and remove any links that may be in a heading found on the Wiki page. Most of these links are for Wiki pages that will be linked to in another way.

Step 2 - Update Headings to Match the Page Layout[edit | edit source]

 • Make any changes by adding headings and deleting old headings. If the heading on the layout page says, optional, do not add it unless it is already on the Wiki page.

 • If there is content under the old heading, look to see where it can go. If it isn't evident, move the content and heading down to the bottom of the page. We will review it later.

 • If a heading has is not on the page, still add it to the Wiki page in proper order.

Step 3 - Add "See...More..." Links to Specific Headings[edit | edit source]

 • For each heading listed below, add the corresponding bullet with the link directly under the heading.

Agencies of the Bureau of Indian Affairs in STATE

*See Agencies of the Bureau of Indian Affairs for more resources.

Reservations in STATE

Indian Censuses

*See United States Special Inquiries Relating to Indians for more resources.
*See American Indian Census Rolls for more resources.

STATE Indian School

*See Indigenous Peoples of the United States School Records for more resources.

Land Allotment Records

*See Allotment Records for Indigenous Peoples of the United States for more resources.

STATE Map of Indian Lands

*See Indigenous Peoples of the United States Maps for more resources.

 • These "See more" links should be directly below the headings and before any other content under that heading.

Part B - Adding Content[edit | edit source]

Step 1 - Add Wikipedia Link[edit | edit source]

 • Under the STATE Native Americans Historical Background heading, add a link to the Wikipedia page or other website about the tribe (if it exists). Use the wikitext below.

*[URL NAMEOFWIKIPEDIA PAGE] at Wikipedia

 • On the Task list, go to the "List of Wikipedia Links" tab and find the corresponding tribe link.

 • If more than one link is listed, review it to see if it can also add to the Wiki page.

 • If no links are found on the task list, search the internet yourself to see if one could be located.

Step 2 - Add New Template to Agency Records Heading[edit | edit source]

 • Under the heading, Agency Records, replace the old Agency Records template wikitext with the text listed below:

Agencies and subagencies were created as administrative offices of the Bureau of Indian Affairs and its predecessors. Their purpose was (and is) to manage Indian affairs with the tribes, to enforce policies, and to assist in maintaining the peace. The local office of the Bureau of Indian Affairs was charged with maintaining records of the activities of those under their responsibility. The names and location of these agencies may have changed, but their purpose remained basically the same. Some records may be available to tribal members through the tribal headquarters. The BIA agency for STATE is the NAMEOFOFFICE Office, [URL BIA].<br>

*Annuity rolls
*Census records
*Correspondence
*Health records
*Reports
*School census and records
*Vital records

6. In the last sentence in the above text in number 5, replace the STATE and which Regional office the state would be in for the state you are working on. Use the website here to determine which it is:

Part C - Linking to Tribe Websites[edit | edit source]

Step 1 - Add Link to Tribe Names in Lists[edit | edit source]

 • Go back to the top of the page to review the lists of tribe names.
 • If there is no website linked in the tribe name, look for one.
 • Link to the Tribe Wiki page.
 • Or, try to locate the official website
 • If that does not exist, look for an active Facebook page (Use Google to find it.)
 • If no official webiste or Facebook page can be located, try to find an official governement website that lists information about the tribe.

Step 2 - Adding Bullet Lists[edit | edit source]

 • Under the Heading, Tribes and Bands of STATE, you will see lists of tribes under several subheadings.

 • For any list of tribes that have over 10 listed, use the ul class to display the links under the subheadings.

 • To do so, click "Edit source" next to the heading with the list of tribes.

 • Copy the following code and paste it immediately above the first tribe n the list.
<ul class="column-spacing-fullscreen" style="padding-right:5px;">

 • Immediately before the tribe name, add <li>.

 • Immediately after that same tribe name, add </li>. See the example below.
 • Note: remove any extra "<br>" instances at the end of the tribe name.

Ul example.png

 • On a line below the tribe listed last in the list, add the following code:
</ul>

 • Click on "Show preview" to see if the coding is correct on the list.

 • If the list looks like the spacing is correct, save the page and move on to the next part. If the tribe names are long and it is pushing content to the next line, try replacing "full" with "half" to determine which is the best way to display the tribe names. See image.

Part D - National Archives Information[edit | edit source]

7. Add National Archives DC information from Native American State Pages template

8. Determine the National Archives branch by going to the corresponding state Archives and Libraries Wiki page. It will give the information there. You can copy it and paste it here.

Part E - Moving Extra Content[edit | edit source]

 • Any information on the current state Indigenous Peoples page that does not fit under any heading on the Wiki page, please move it to the bottom of the page under References.

Part F - Checking Links and Reformatting[edit | edit source]

 • For the whole page, check all the URL links on the page to make sure they work. If any are broken, use the Wayback Machine to help you locate the new URL. If one cannot be found, add it to Column # to make a note about the link (For now, leave the broken link on the sandbox page.)

 • Use the Manual of Style to reformat the book citations listed on the Wiki page.
 • If the book is referred to in the body of the Wiki page in any sort of list, use format, Book Title First.
 • If the book is a reference at the bottom of the page using a ref, use Author Name First.
