County Information
Description
The county was named for Dr. Jack Shackelford, a Virginia physician who equipped soldiers at his own expense to fight in the Texas Revolution. The county is located in the northwest area of the state.[1] The first permanent settler arrived in 1858 and Fort Griffin was established in 1867.
