Background[edit | edit source]
The French attempted 19 census of the area between 1830-1962. While these censuses do provide information about both the native Algerians and French populations, there is more information about Europeans living in Algeria. The last census while Algeria was under French rule was in 1960.[1]
Additional censuses were also created in 1966, 1977, 1987, 1998, and 2020.
Information Recorded in the Records[edit | edit source]
- The census records found in the Département d'Oran, fonds de la préfecture, sous-série 1 G, population Archival (1906, 1911, 1931, 1954) contain the following information about Algerian citizens: Births, marriages, deaths, population statistics and movements.
- The censuses created in 1966, 1977, 1987, 1998, and 2020 include the following information: Name, age, sex, household relationships.
