Historical Background

Registry of Births, Marriages and Deaths for less than 100 years is kept by the French Ministry for Foreign Affairs – Central Department for Births, Marriages and Deaths.

"From 1830 to 1962 the so-called European civil status registers were established in two copies.... When Algeria gained independence, these registers remained in Algeria.... The Ministry of Foreign Affairs undertook between 1967 and 1972 the reproduction on microfilm of part of these registers, approximately two-thirds. Some municipalities are missing altogether and others are incomplete. At the request of the Algerian government, the acts concerning the natives were to be concealed during the microfilming. These microfilms have been digitized. On the initiative of the Ministry of Culture, an alphabetical base of acts from 1830 to 1904, with names and surnames, was established in 2003, which facilitates access to digitized images."[1]
