County Instructions
1. Open the US County Task List and sign your name in cell A2 of a state tab (each tab is a different state).
2. Open the Catalog for the US and click "Places within United States."
3. Choose the name in the catalog that matches the name of your tab on the task list.
4. Click "Places within United States, STATE" and then copy the list of counties within the state you are working on and paste it into Column C of the task list.
4. We will be gathering:
- Business (or Business Records and Commerce)
- Church Records
- Crime and Criminals
- Genealogies
- Guardianship (can sometimes be under Probate Records/Probate Reords - Indexes)
- Land and Property Records
- Merchant Marine
- Military Records
- Minorities
- Naturalization and Citizenship
- Notorial
- Obituaries
- Occupations
- Officials and Employees
- Public Records
- School Records
- Slavery and Bondage
- Tax Records
- Vital Records
- Voter (or Voting Registers)
including indexes for the counties within the states.
5. Begin by clicking the triangles next to the different topics. If there aren't any for that heading, they don't exist at that jurisdictional level. Then click "Add" under the Print List column.
6. On the task list, mark off with a highlight the county you just finished so you can keep track of which county's links you have gathered.
8. Once you are done with a county, get back to the larger list of places within your state by clicking "Part of United States, STATE"
9. You will need to then click "United States, STATE, COUNTY" and repeat the steps in steps 4 and 5 until all the places within have been checked and added to the print list.
10. When you get to the end of the counties in a state, click at the top of the page "Catalog Print List"
11. Copy all of the table on the Catalog Print List Page and paste it in the Task List in Cell D2
12. If you ever need to take a break in the middle of adding to the print list, it should save if you are signed in to FamilySearch. However, to prevent loss of work, take note of which locality you finished and paste your unfinished list on the task list.
13. You do not need to clean the sheet up, just make sure the links have pasted in. When you are finished, type "Finished" in Cell E1.
Watch the video for how to do all of these things.
New England Town Instructions
- Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont all have town pages that need to have catalog links extracted as well.
- The instructions for gathering links is the same as the county level, you just have to gather links at one jurisdiction lower than county.
1. Open the New England Task List and sign your name in cell A2 of a New England County tab (each tab is a different county in New England).
2. Open the Catalog for the US and click "Places within United States."
3. Choose the state in the catalog that matches the name of your tab on the task list.
4. Then click "Places with United States, STATE"
5. Then click "Places within United States, STATE, COUNTY" to see a list of the towns.
6. Follow the instructions starting in step 4 of the County Instructions.
Other Tips
- The Print List won't allow for duplicates. Some collections appear in multiple localities. A duplicate will allow you to remove it, so be sure you are only clicking "Add" when going through localities.
- If you feel you need to make a note of something, do so in Column F
