Brief History[edit | edit source]

2nd Infantry Regiment completed its organization at Corinth, Mississippi, in April, 1861, with men from Tishomingo, Tippah, Itawamba, and Pontotoc counties. Ordered to Harper's Ferry, Virginia, it was there mustered into Confederate service. During the war it was assigned to General Whiting's, Law's, and J.R. Davis' Brigade, Army of Northern Virginia. Only 1 officer and 19 men surrendered. The field officers were Colonels William C. Falkner and John M. Stone; Lieutenant Colonels John A. Blair, Bartley B. Boone, and D.W. Humphreys; and Major John H. Buchanan.

A detailed history, including several statistical graphs, is found in the history portion of the 2nd Mississippi Infantry RegimentInternet site.

Regiment Companies with the County of Origin[edit | edit source]

Men often enlisted in a company recruited in the counties where they lived though not always. After many battles, companies might be combined because so many men were killed or wounded. However if you are unsure which company your ancestor was in, try the company recruited in his county first.

An Alphabetical Listing Roster of the men serving in this regiment and the name and mustering in date of each company is found in the member rosters section of the 2nd Mississippi Infantry Regiment Internet site.

Another regimental roster, organized according to company, is found on the Rootsweb Internet site, also titled '2nd Mississippi Infantry Regiment'.
