Historical Background
British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT) is a British colony in the Indian Ocean. It was formerly part of Mauritius. In 1965, BIOT was split off for military purposes (the base at Diego Garcia). Mauritius still claims these islands and her claim is recognized by the United Nations.[1]
In 2018, the only inhabitants are about 3,000 US and British military personnel and associated contractors. Previously the BIOT was inhabited by about 2,000 people (Chagossians), who were removed to Mauritius and Seychelles.[2]
