Historical Background
Civil registration of births, marriages, and deaths began in 1877.
Law of the National Registry of Persons (Ley de la RENAP)
In 2006, the Law of the National Registry of Persons (RENAP) began, replacing the Civil Registry. The Civil Registry began in 1877 when civil registration was separated from the Catholic Church, since then being a "civil" and no longer ecclesiastical registry. The Civil Registry codes were created and updated in 1877, 1933 and the current one since 1964.
Due to this, the books of Births, Deaths and Marriages, are currently in charge of the National Registry of Persons.
