Local public libraries—even smaller ones—may have histories, genealogies, indexes of cemeteries, copies of local newspapers, or other records for the area they serve. Many libraries in Washington have an area dedicated to local history and genealogy.

A library's unique collections may include card indexes, obituary scrapbooks, genealogy papers, and other unpublished manuscripts.
