The 1st Regiment, Kansas Infantry was organized at Camp Lincoln, Fort Leavenworth, May 20 to June 3, 1861. It mustered out June 19, 1864. However veterans were on duty in the District of Vicksburg, Mississippi, until August, 1864. They mustered out August 30, 1865.

Men often enlisted in a company recruited in the counties where they lived though not always. After many battles, companies might be combined because so many men were killed or wounded. However if you are unsure which company your ancestor was in, try the company recruited in his county first.[1] The First Regiment consisted of volunteer companies in the counties of Atchison, Brown Bourbon, Cherokee, Coffey, Douglas, Doniphan, Franklin, Gray, Leavenworth, Marshall, and Shawnee.
