The 14th Kentucky Cavalry was organized in the fall of 1862, under Colonel H.C. Lilly. Companies A, B, C, and D. were mustered in November 6, 1862, at Mt. Sterling, Kentucky. Companies E. F. G. H. I. J. K. L. and M. were mustered in at Irvine, Kentucky, February 13, 1863. This organization acted in the capacity of scouts and operated by battalions. They were to prevent frequent raids by guerrillas which effected the local residents of that section of the state.<ref>Kentucky.
