Huntingdonshire Societies: Difference between revisions

:The Cambridge Antiquarian Society was founded in 1840 to provide access for local people to the local history, architecture, and archaeology of Cambridgeshire (which now includes the old County of Huntingdon and the new Unitary Authority of Peterborough).

:Local communities are a vital tool in helping archaeologists identify, understand and protect Cambridgeshire's rich archaeological heritage. Jigsaw started as a five-year Heritage Lottery Funded project (2011-2016) by Oxford Archaeology East and Cambridgeshire County Council to assist local history and archaeological societies in historical research, excavation, artefact identification, recording, and much more.  

:The Society was founded in 1910 to print records and documents relating to the ancient county and diocese of Lincoln. The ancient diocese covered not only Lincolnshire, the second largest county of England, but also the wide area which lay within the medieval diocese: the counties of Lincoln, Leicester, Northampton, Rutland, Oxford, Bedford, Buckingham, Huntingdon and northern Hertford. Since 1910 the Society has published ninety nine volumes many of which are still in print.

:The Society is primarily concerned with researching the local history with a view to publishing the results.

:Covington History Group was formed with the aim of researching, recording and presenting the history of the village.  

:We are a group of amateurs with a strong interest in Gamlingay’s history and particularly archaeology.  We do, however, have members from other local villages and our interests will extend there.

:Gamlingay and District History Society is a society for everyone who has an interest in the history of Gamlingay.

:The Gransdens Society is a local organisation for everyone interested in the past, present, and future of the Cambridgeshire villages of Great Gransden and Little Gransden.

:This group will explore the fascinating history of the former Whittlesea Mere by means of artefacts already found and through treasures waiting to be uncovered!

:We are interested in all aspects of the rich Fenland heritage, from archaeology and architecture to historical events and local people’s stories. The changing Fenland landscape, its wildlife and its place in the lives of local communities, is a theme running through all our activities.

:The Society, formed in 1994, aims to increase knowledge of earlier times in Hemingford Grey, Hemingford Abbots and the surrounding area.  

:Huntingdonshire Family History Society (HFHS) was founded in 1985 to help people to find out about their family history. The county reorganisation in 1974 saw Huntingdonshire become part of a greater Cambridgeshire.  The Society aims to provide links between people interested in families of the old County of Huntingdonshire and to provide a forum for persons interested in genealogy generally.

:The Society was founded in 1957 to promote interest in the local history of Huntingdonshire and throughout the year provides a programme of lectures, events, excursions and publications.

:The Peterborough and District Family History Society has now been established for a third of a century. During that time we have successfully raised the profile of family history within the local area, transcribing and indexing many thousands of records and assisting hundreds of people with their research.  The Society was formed in 1980 to maintain an association of those interested in the study of Family History, Genealogical Studies, Local History and Heraldry. It promotes the preservation of documents, monuments and other material of special interest to Family Historians. It aims to transcribe and index relevant documents and monumental inscriptions.

:The aims of Sawtry History Society are to research, record, and preserve the history of Sawtry and surrounding villages of Glatton, Conington, Coppingford, and Holme for the benefit of local people.

:Our aims are to promote interest in local archaeology and heritage in the St Ives area; to plan and take part in activities including fieldwork, workshops, talks, and visits which will further understanding of the heritage and archeology of the area, and to publish research findings; and to make information generated through the activities of the group available to authorities responsible for updating the Cambridgeshire Historical Environmental Record and to local communities.

:The St. Neots Local History Society, founded in 1981, exists to promote interest in the rich and varied history of the town of St. Neots and the surrounding area through monthly meetings, research and summer outings.  

:The society was founded in 1992 to promote the study of local history in this part of Huntingdonshire. There is also an Archaeology group which is a sub-group of the Warboys History Society.
