French Colonization (1649-1763)[edit | edit source]

In 1649 a French expedition of 203 men from Martinique founded a permanent settlement on Grenada. The British captured Grenada during the Seven Years' War in 1762 and it was formally ceded to Britain in 1763. [1]

British Colonization (1763-1974)[edit | edit source]

Grenada was formally ceded to Britain by the Treaty of Paris in 1763. Independence was granted on 7 February 1974, under the leadership of Eric Gairy, who became the first Prime Minister of Grenada. [2]
