Soldiers, 103rd NY infantry

Brief History[edit | edit source]

The 103rd Regiment, New York Infantry, also known as "Seward Infantry"[1], was organized at New York City from November, 1861, to March, 1862. The duty of this regiment was in the Department of Virginia until December, 1865.[2] They were mustered out at New York City on December 7, 1865 under Colonel William Heine.[3]

For more information on the history of this unit, see:

Companies in this Regiment with the Counties of Origin[edit | edit source]

Men often enlisted in a company recruited in the counties where they lived, though not always. After many battles, companies might be combined because so many men were killed or wounded. If you are unsure which company your ancestor was in, try the company recruited in his county first.

See the Regiment Roster, for listing of individuals, their company and their involvement.

Company A - principally recruited from Grenadiers in New York City

Company B - principally recruited from "Corps d'Elite"

Company C - principally recruited from "Corps d'Elite"

Company D - principally recruited from the "3rd German Rifles"

Company E - principally recruited from the "3rd German Rifles"

Company F - principally recruited from the "3rd German Rifles"

Company G - principally recruited from Baker's Rifles and New York Battery, at Elmira, Chemung County

Company H - principally recruited from Baker's Rifles and New York Battery, at Elmira, Chemung County

Company I - principally recruited from Baker's Rifles and New York Battery, at Elmira, Chemung County

Company K - principally recruited from Baker's Rifles and New York Battery, at Elmira, Chemung County
