Brief History[edit | edit source]

The 53rd Regiment, Ohio Infantry mustered in September 3, 1861, to February 11, 1862 at Jackson, Ohio. They were mustered out August 11, 1865 at Little Rock, Arkansas. ^[1]

Companies in this Regiment with the Counties of Origin[edit | edit source]

Men often enlisted in a company recruited in the counties where they lived though not always. After many battles, companies might be combined because so many men were killed or wounded. However if you are unsure which company your ancestor was in, try the company recruited in his county first.

Company A - Many men from Pike County.
Company B - Many men from Athens County.
Company C - Many men from Jackson County.
Company D - Many men from Jackson County.
Company E - Many men from Jackson County.
Company F - Many men from Jackson and Pike Counties.
Company G - Many men from Athens & Lawrence Counties.
Company H - Many men from Meigs County.
Company I - Many men from Jackson and Meigs Counties.
Company K - Many men from Pike County.
