The majority of the inhabitants of Christmas Island are of Chinese, Malay, and Indian descent.[1]
Christmas Island was annexed by Britain in 1888. The island was leased to naturalist John Murray and George Clunies-Ross, the owner of the Cocos Islands. In 1949 administration of the island went to the British colony of Singapore. On 1 October 1958, the island became an Australian territory.[2]
The Cocos (Keeling) Islands and Christmas Island are part of the Australian Indian Ocean Territories since 1995. This is an administrative unit under the Australian Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Cities and Regional Development. Each has its own Shire Council: the Shire of Christmas Island and the Shire of Cocos.[3]
